Senegal is taking measures to stop the destruction of Saint Louis heritage site following a warning by UNESCO to withdraw this status from the historic city due to deterioration of vestiges. Saint Louis was named as a World Heritage site in the year 2000.
In 2005 the city had about 1300 buildings with about 700 of great architectural interest dating back to the 17th century.
Today about at least 200 of the cherished buildings have been lost.
Speaking out on the issue some members of an Association in charge of safeguarding the Saint Louis Heritage said the destruction of the heritage is mainly as a result of the project being undertaken to modernise the city.
A series of events have been organised as from this Monday December 26 to help everyone rediscover the hidden treasures of Saint Louis.
